There is a lot of talk how renewables is reshaping the power sector, and one key impact is how the other energy sources are forced to adapt to a new paradigm.
Katinka Bogaard and Vegard Wiik Vollset explored this in a recent webinar. looked at how gas has shifted in recent years from relatively stable daily dispatch to much larger variability. Especially in summer months, when the solar midday peak makes its presence acutely felt.
This shift is fundamentally changing the role of gas, moving away from baseload and increasingly toward peaking capacity. A case in point, Germany recently announced it will launch a capacity mechanism auction to support the economics of gas (and other flexibility/LDES assets) going forward.
